Dental Implants

What exactly is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a device (made from Titanium, a metal alloy that the body readily accepts) that is inserted into the jaw to support a prosthetic tooth or teeth acting like an arificial tooth root. Over time the jawbone integrates (fuses) with the implant surface providing a firm anchor to support a crown, bridge or denture.

Who's a candidate?

The best candidates have good general oral health with healthy gum tissue free of periodontal disease as an adequate jaw bone is required to support the implant. Some chronic diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis, or chronic sinus problems may interfere with proper healing and could prevent the bone from integrating with the implant. Long-term medication use and certain behaviors like smoking may also affect the stability of the implant over time.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • They are the closest replacement to natural teeth
  • They remove the need to cut down healthy teeth to incorporate a bridge
  • They can eliminate the pain caused by poor fitting dentures
  • They won't interfere with your speech as some dentures can.
  • They help preserve your jaw bones
  • They regain your confidence to smile again
  • They are more affordable than you may think
