Crowns and Bridges

Crown

A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. Teeth can require crowns for a variety of reasons; decay, fracture or discoloration. Its purpose is to strengthen or improve the appearance of a tooth along with supporting the adjacent teeth. The procedure requires the tooth to be shaped and prepared to accept the crown which is then cemented onto the natural tooth. A tooth that has had root canal treatment usually needs the structural support provided by a crown. Crowns can also be used to lengthen short or worn down teeth for a more esthetic appearance.

Bridge

A Bridge is a custom-made device anchored to neighboring natural teeth, which replaces one or more missing teeth. Simply put, a bridge fills the gap where teeth are absent. A pontic replaces the lost tooth and the teeth on either side of the missing one are prepared as crowns which are cemented onto the natural teeth to provide support for the bridge. A bridge provides support for your lips and cheeks. Without a bridge your teeth will shift, your jaw may sink making your face look older. Bridges are sometimes referred to as a "fixed partial denture".

There are two types of Bridges:

  1. Fixed; (as illustrated) is cemented to the natural surrounding teeth and is considered permanent. They can only be removed by your dentist.
  2. Removable; allows you to take the bridge out to clean. Although this may be a less expensive option,it may not be as stable as a fixed bridge.

Choosing the right bridge depends upon your current oral health. Talk to your dentist to determine what type is best for you.
