Bleaching is a process that lightens discolorations of tooth enamel.
The most common factors of discoloration include aging, trauma,
excessive flouride treatments, consumption of coffee, tea, colas,
and smoking, to name a few. The bleaching gel is placed in a thin
bleaching tray that is custom made to fit over your teeth. As the
active ingredient in the gel, carbamide
peroxide, is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel
and dentin and bleaches the colored substances. Bleaching is ideal
for patients who have healthy, unrestored teeth and would like to
have a whiter, brighter smile. Bleaching can be for anyone, however,
there are some cases where treatment may not be effective, therefore,
an oral examination and consult with your dentist is suggested to
determine the viability of this treatment.
Porcelain Veneers are very thin porcelain shells
custom made to make your teeth look natural. The procedure entails
the removal of some enamel
from the front of each tooth so to ensure a strong adhesion. An
impression is then made of your teeth so a custom veneer can be
made for a precision fit. At this time we can modify the shape of
the veneer to improve the appearance of your natural teeth. On your
second visit, the veneers are then bonded to your teeth. Veneers,
although durable and stain resistant, do require the same level
of oral hygiene of your regular teeth. They can chip too, if they're
not cared for properly, so be careful.
The old silver amalgam
fillings are unesthetic in appearance and have created a controversy
about how they may contain mercury. Both patients and dentists alike
prefer not to use this type of filling and may choose to replace
current silver fillings with a more natural white filling; porcelain.
The color of the porcelain inlay can be created to match the natural
tooth color and with bonding cements, the inlay blends seamlessly
with the tooth structure providing a more esthetic
appearance.
